Job Summary: The Polis Center at IUPUI is seeking a highly motivated individual to support its GIS and data analysis needs for its Community Information System projects.

The GIS Technician will primarily support the SAVI Community Information System (SAVI) through the use of GIS and database software. SAVI helps organizations make data-informed decisions in part by providing reliable, up-to-date data. It includes a comprehensive database of mapped and tabular data about social, economic, and physical conditions of the communities of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The SAVI community information system collects, organizes, and presents a central warehouse of integrated data from over 30 federal, state, and local providers, all linked to the lowest available geographic level and including over 8,000 time-series variables from 1980 to the present.

GIS tasks will include geocoding, geotagging, digitizing new data, editing existing data sets, map creation and reporting in support of SAVI and other Community Informatics projects. Familiarity of multiple types of ESRI data formats such as shapefiles, personal geodatabases, and file geodatabases is important. Database tasks will include collection of data from local, state, and federal sources such as U.S. Census Bureau. Data editing, manipulation, and querying will also be required. Some data analysis may also be required.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the following attributes and skills:

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 2010 or later – particularly Excel and Access
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Good organizational skills. Be able to work as part of a team, and be willing to ask for direction when needed.
  • Quality Control/Quality Assurance knowledge, familiarity with the SAVI Community Information System, database experience, and/or statistical analysis experience using SPSS, Stata, or other statistical software a plus.

The Polis Center is located at 1200 Waterway Blvd Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46202. This is a part time position, approximately 10-20 hours per week. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

To Apply: Interested candidates should submit a resume to magona@iupui.edu. Please include a short sample of technical or professional writing, or maps created using GIS software.
