Community Informatics

The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is a national organization that supports local community development efforts and helps create sustainable communities.

We partnered with LISC in a cross-site initiative to design a template for community assessment and evaluation, analyze neighborhood change, and measure LISC’s investment impact on neighborhoods.

The cross-site initiative included 10 sustainable communities

  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Duluth, Minnesota
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Kansas City, Missouri
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Rhode Island
  • Rural Pennsylvania
  • San Francisco Bay area
  • Twin Cities region
  • Washington, D.C.

These sites represent a bold departure from LISC’s transaction-and organization-focused work of the past and mark a new path for the community development field.

In Indianapolis, we analyzed six neighborhoods in the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiative: Crooked Creek, Binford Revitalization and Growth, Near Westside, West Indianapolis, Near Eastside, and Southeast using neighborhood-level data from SAVI to analyze such things as neighborhood conditions, housing markets, economy and workforce, community quality and safety, community institutions and relationships, education and culture, demographics, and social and health indicators.
