We established the IUPUI Center for Health Geographics to provide unique opportunities to investigate the role of the environment in human health. This interdisciplinary center has expertise in geographic information science, social science, clinical epidemiology, medical and community informatics, and health services research. It includes core faculty members, professional staff members, and graduate assistants. Our partners are the Institute for Research on Social Issues, the Regenstrief Institute, the IUPUI Department of Geography, and Children’s Health Research Services.
Areas of Research Emphasis
- Geospatial technologies and standards for health surveillance
- Spatial and temporal contexts of health behaviors and health outcomes, including space-time models for investigating disease and mortality trends
- Community determinants of individual and population health
We held the first Health Geographics Symposium on February 8, 2011, at IUPUI. The purpose of the symposium was to help university faculty, administrators, and students understand and explore opportunities related to the use of spatial information for health research and practice.
